The implementation of a six-weeks program to develop four of the fundamental locomotor skills running, walking, skipping and jumping, with 6 to 9 years old children at patchakan R.C school
Abstract
This research project, authored by Rafael Ramirez in 1997, details the implementation and results of a six-week physical education program at Patchakan Roman Catholic School. The study was prompted by the observation that physical education was often neglected in rural Belizean schools, frequently being replaced by remedial academic work or limited to unorganized sports like football and softball. Focusing on children aged six to nine, the researcher introduced structured lessons designed to master four fundamental locomotor skills: running, walking, skipping, and jumping. The program aimed to move beyond the traditional "play-only" perception of physical education, instead using task analysis and specific teaching cues to improve students' body posture, coordination, and confidence. The author concludes that such structured programs are vital for the holistic development of children, helping them improve not only physically but also socially and mentally by learning to follow instructions and cooperate in a group setting.
