Abstract

This document, authored by Elisa Frazer in 1998, presents a three-week research project conducted at the Stella Maris School in Belize City, which specializes in educating children with special needs. The study focuses on detailed evaluations of individual students, such as a ten-year-old boy named Kent, utilizing a variety of assessment tools including handwriting samples, oral reading and spelling tests, and the Burk's Behavior Rating Scales. Through interviews with school staff and observations of the students' home and academic backgrounds, the researcher identifies significant discrepancies between students' learning styles and the methods of instruction used by teachers. The report concludes by offering specific recommendations for improving academic performance, such as adjusting the conceptual level of lessons and providing targeted academic assistance, with the goal of helping these students function productively in society.
