A Survey To Determine Parents Teachers Students Attitudes Toward The Teaching Of Spanish As A Primary Subject In The Upper Division Of Queens Square Anglican School.

Abstract

Submitted by Shannon Burgess in 1995, this research paper examines the attitudes of parents, teachers, and students at Queen's Square Anglican School regarding the inclusion of Spanish as a primary subject in the Upper Division. The study highlights that while Belize is surrounded by Spanish-speaking neighbors and is experiencing an influx of refugees, many urban children in Belize City lack exposure to the language, putting them at a competitive disadvantage in the job market. Data collected through questionnaires revealed that 93.7% of parents believed their children would benefit from Spanish instruction and 100% expressed a willingness to assist their children in learning the language. The author argues that teaching Spanish in primary school is a necessity that will improve student communication skills, lead to better grades in high school, and eventually benefit the entire community in a modern multi-lingual society
