Abstract

This final report, dated March 1989, details fieldwork conducted by Harriot W. Topsey, Allan F. Moore, and Cynthia Ellis to investigate the lives of young women aged six to eighteen surviving on the streets of Belize City. The study contextualizes the issue within Belize's socio-economic landscape, noting high unemployment among women and youth, as well as the "rural-urban drift" that places intense pressure on limited city resources. Through interviews with 33 girls, the researchers explored their belief systems, living conditions, and the factors that led them to the streets. The findings emphasize a critical lack of rehabilitation facilities and recommend urgent strategies to improve the girls' lives, including better health and education services and protection from exploitation.
