A Hydrological And Vegetive Study Of The Bladen Branch Monkey River Watershed

Published 2026-04-14

Abstract

Conducted by Arin Simonian as part of an academic semester abroad, this four-week study focuses on the pristine riparian habitat of the Bladen River within the Maya Mountains of Belize. The researcher utilized map interpretation and direct observation to document the size and shapes of sand and gravel bars, as well as the vegetation inhabiting them, along a 2100-meter stretch of the river. The project establishes vital baseline data for an area that has largely escaped human disturbance but faces significant future threats from proposed long-term sand and gravel mining in the adjacent Deep River Forest Reserve. The study concludes that the health of the Bladen Nature Reserve and the wider Monkey River Watershed is intricately linked to the river's undisturbed state, emphasizing the need for continued monitoring to understand changing flow patterns over time.
