A SURVEY TO INVESTIGATE THE CAUSES FOR TRUANCY AMONG STUDENTS IN THREE PRIMARY SCHOOLS IN DANGRIGA

Published 2024-05-23

Abstract

This survey-based investigation explores the causes for truancy and high dropout rates among students in three selected primary schools in Dangriga, Belize. Despite the government's policy of free and compulsory primary education, the researcher observed a significant number of school-aged children loitering or working in the streets during school hours. The study aims to determine how socio-economic factors influence these trends and to provide recommendations to stakeholders—including parents, teachers, and the Ministry of Education—to help alleviate the problem. By identifying specific causes such as poverty and family obligations, the research seeks to inform and motivate educators and guardians to improve classroom management and student relationships, ultimately working toward a decrease in the dropout rate.
